We’re proud to share that our Lead Dry Eye Optometrist, Shaina Zheng, will be presenting at this month’s APP Pharmacy Conference, contributing to national discussions on the evolving clinical landscape of Dry Eye Disease.
The APP Conference brings together pharmacy leaders from across Australia, and Shaina has been invited to share clinical insights to help pharmacists better understand their important frontline role in supporting patients with dry eyes.
Advancing Understanding of Dry Eye Disease
Dry Eye Disease is far more complex than many people realise. During her presentation, Shaina will explore three important themes:
1️⃣ The link between Dry Eye Disease and mental health: Emerging research highlights a strong association between dry eye symptoms and mental wellbeing, with symptom severity closely linked to depression and anxiety. Chronic discomfort can affect sleep, concentration, productivity, and overall quality of life.
2️⃣ The role of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD): Up to 85% of Dry Eye Disease is evaporative in nature, most commonly driven by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Understanding this underlying cause is critical for effective long-term management, rather than simply treating surface symptoms.
3️⃣ The frontline role of pharmacists: Pharmacists are often the first health professionals patients consult for dry eye symptoms. Early identification, appropriate first-line advice, patient education, and timely referral to optometrists can significantly improve outcomes.
