Eyecare Plus Mermaid Beach provides gentle, evidence-based care for styes and chalazion.
Our optometrists, Jackson Yip, Shaina Zheng, and Alicia Lou, focus on treating the underlying cause so you get lasting relief, not just quick fixes.

Understanding Styes
A stye is a small, red, painful lump that forms when an oil gland or eyelash follicle on your eyelid becomes blocked and infected.

What Causes a Stye?
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is the main cause. The tiny oil glands along your eyelids become blocked, preventing natural oil flow.
This often occurs alongside blepharitis, a chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins that causes redness, crusting, and irritation.
When a gland is blocked, trapped oil and debris create an ideal environment for bacteria. Once bacteria invade a blocked gland, it becomes infected, forming a stye.
If the stye persists, inflammation and trapped material can harden into a firm, painless lump called a chalazion.
In short:
-
MGD → blocked oil gland
-
Bacterial invasion → infection → stye
-
Persistent blockage/inflammation → chalazion
At Eyecare Plus Mermaid Beach, we treat both the infection and the gland dysfunction to prevent recurrence.

Inmode Envision: RF & IPL
We’re proud to be the first optometry clinic in Australia to offer Inmode Envision, combining Radiofrequency (RF)and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for advanced eyelid treatment.
-
RF gently heats the eyelid tissue to soften and unblock the oil glands.
-
IPL targets bacteria and inflammation to improve meibomian gland health and reduce redness.

LLLT (Low-Level Light Therapy)
A gentle, non-invasive light therapy that reduces inflammation, stimulates healing, and improves oil flow. Ideal for patients with recurrent styes, blepharitis, or MGD.

Warm Compress & Eyelid Hygiene
We guide you on safe and effective warm compress routines and daily lid cleaning to prevent recurrence and maintain eyelid health.

Is a stye contagious?
Not usually by casual contact, but avoid sharing towels or makeup and practise good eyelid hygiene.

What is a chalazion?
A chalazion is a firm, painless lump that develops when a stye doesn’t completely heal and inflammation persists.
