Our optometrists, Jackson Yip, Shaina Zheng, and Alicia Lou, focus on treating the underlying cause so you get lasting relief, not just quick fixes.

Understanding Chalazia
A chalazion is a firm, painless (or mildly tender) lump that forms when an oil gland in your eyelid becomes blocked and inflamed. Unlike a stye, a chalazion is not caused by an active infection, and it usually develops more gradually.

What Causes a Chalazion?
The main underlying cause is Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The tiny oil glands inside your eyelids become clogged, preventing natural oil from flowing out.
Chalazia often occur in people who also have blepharitis, a chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins that leads to redness, irritation, and crusting along the lashes. This inflammation makes the oil glands more likely to block.
When a Meibomian gland is blocked, oil builds up inside the gland. Over time, this trapped oil and debris trigger localized inflammation, forming a firm lump deeper in the eyelid.
A chalazion can sometimes form after a stye has healed, once the infection resolves but the gland remains blocked.
In short:
MGD → blocked oil gland
Trapped oil + inflammation → chalazion
Previous stye → residual blockage → chalazion

At Eyecare Plus Mermaid Beach, we focus on treating the underlying gland dysfunction and reducing inflammation to prevent chalazia from recurring.

Inmode Envision: RF & IPL
We’re proud to be the first optometry clinic in Australia to offer Inmode Envision, combining Radiofrequency (RF)and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for advanced eyelid treatment.

RF gently heats the eyelid tissue to soften and unblock the oil glands.
-
IPL targets bacteria and inflammation to improve meibomian gland health and reduce redness.

LLLT (Low-Level Light Therapy)
A gentle, non-invasive light therapy that reduces inflammation, stimulates healing, and improves oil flow. Ideal for patients with recurrent chalazion, blepharitis, or MGD.

Is a chalazion contagious?
No. A chalazion is not an infection, so it cannot spread from person to person. However, good eyelid hygiene helps prevent new blockages from forming.

What is a chalazion?
A chalazion is a firm, painless lump that develops when a stye doesn’t completely heal and inflammation persists.
