Chalazion Treatment: Gentle, Effective Care for Eyelid Lumps

A lump on your eyelid can be worrying, especially when it doesn’t go away. If you’ve noticed a firm, slowly enlarging bump on your eyelid that isn’t particularly painful, you may be dealing with a chalazion.

At Eyecare Plus Mermaid Beach, we provide evidence-based, non-surgical chalazion treatment on the Gold Coast. Our experienced optometrists, Jackson Yip, Shaina Zheng, and Alicia Lou, focus on treating the underlying cause, helping you achieve lasting relief and reducing the risk of recurrence.

Do You Have Symptoms of a Chalazion?

Common signs of a chalazion include:

  • A firm, red or skin-coloured lump on the eyelid

  • Usually painless, or only mildly tender early on

  • A lump that gradually enlarges over days or weeks

  • A feeling of heaviness in the eyelid

  • Swelling more toward the middle of the eyelid, rather than the lash line

  • Occasional watery eyes

  • Blurred vision if the chalazion presses on the eye

  • A history of styes or recurrent eyelid inflammation

If this sounds familiar, professional assessment is important to confirm the diagnosis and guide treatment.

What Is a Chalazion?

A chalazion is a firm lump that forms when one of the oil-producing Meibomian glands inside the eyelid becomes blocked and inflamed.

Unlike a stye, a chalazion:

  • Is not an active infection

  • Develops slowly

  • Is often painless

A chalazion may sometimes develop after a stye appears to heal, when the infection resolves but the oil gland remains blocked.

What Causes a Chalazion?

The most common underlying cause is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

Here’s how it typically develops:

  • MGD → oil glands become blocked

  • Trapped oil builds up inside the gland

  • Chronic inflammation develops

  • A firm lump (chalazion) forms

Chalazia are also more common in people with:

  • Blepharitis (chronic eyelid inflammation)

  • Rosacea

  • Recurrent styes

  • Poor eyelid hygiene

At Eyecare Plus Mermaid Beach, we treat both the chalazion and the underlying eyelid disease to prevent repeat episodes.

Advanced Chalazion Treatment at Eyecare Plus Mermaid Beach

We take a holistic, non-surgical approach, combining advanced in-clinic technology with personalised home care.

Inmode Envision: RF & IPL

We are proud to be the first optometry clinic in Australia to offer Inmode Envision, and the only practice on the Gold Coast with this technology.

  • Radiofrequency (RF) gently heats the eyelids to soften thickened oils and unblock glands

  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) targets inflammation and abnormal blood vessels, improving gland health

This combination is particularly effective for recurrent chalazion and underlying MGD.

LLLT (Low-Level Light Therapy)

LLLT is a gentle, non-invasive light therapy that:

  • Reduces eyelid inflammation

  • Stimulates healing

  • Improves oil flow from the glands

It is ideal for patients with recurrent chalazion, blepharitis, or dry eye disease.

Warm Compresses & Eyelid Hygiene

We provide detailed guidance on:

  • Safe and effective warm compress techniques

  • Daily eyelid cleaning routines

  • Long-term eyelid care strategies

Correct technique makes a significant difference in outcomes and prevention.

How Long Does a Chalazion Last?

Most chalazia resolve within 2–6 weeks, depending on size and severity.

Professional treatment can:

  • Speed up resolution

  • Reduce discomfort

  • Lower the risk of recurrence

  • Help avoid the need for surgical intervention

Is a Chalazion Contagious?

No. A chalazion is not an infection and cannot be spread to others. However, good eyelid hygiene is essential to prevent further gland blockages.

Preventing Future Chalazia

To reduce recurrence, we recommend:

  • Cleaning your eyelids daily with a gentle cleanser

  • Using warm compresses regularly

  • Removing eye makeup before bed

  • Replacing eye makeup regularly

  • Washing hands before touching your eyes or contact lenses

  • Managing underlying conditions such as blepharitis or rosacea

  • Scheduling review appointments if chalazia recur
